Gender-Based Violence and Justice in Conflict and Post-Conflict Areas

Article by the former UNSRVAW adapted from the Keynote Address at a Symposium in March 2010
publication date:
Jul 24, 2011

“War is an inherently patriarchal activity, and rape is one of the most extreme expressions of the patriarchal drive toward masculine domination
over the woman. This patriarchal ideology is further enforced by the aggressive character of the war itself, that is to dominate and control
another nation or people.”

First-ever report on femicide (2012) of the UN SRVAW Rashida Manjoo

First thematic report of the UN Special Rapporteur on VAW, which address the topic of gender-related killing of women and girls (femicide).
publication date:
May 23, 2012
source / author:

This thematic report addresses the topic of gender-related killings of women. Rather than a new form of violence, gender-related killings are the extreme manifestation of existing forms of violence against women. Such killings are not isolated incidents that arise suddenly and unexpectedly, but represent the ultimate act of violence which is experienced in a continuum of violence. Women subjected to continuous
violence and living under conditions of gender-based discrimination and threat are always on ―death row, always in fear of execution‖.
