Executive Summary

This webpage highlights the work of the REDress Project which was created in 2010 by Jamie Black who is a Metis artist from Winnipeg, Canada. The project is an installation art project that focuses on bringing awareness to the gendered and racialized violence against Indigenous women. The REDress Project has been carried out in public spaces throughout Canada and the United States in which red dresses are hung. The webpage showcases visuals of the public spaces where the dresses have been hung. These dresses are an aesthetic response that serves as a visual reminder of the significant number of missing and murdered Indigenous women in Canada.

“Through the installation, I hope to draw attention to the gendered and racialized nature of violent crimes against Aboriginal women and to evoke a presence through the marking of absence.”
