Executive Summary

Silvana Fumega discusses how better data on gender-based violence in Latin America is needed now more than ever. The author describes the impact of lockdowns, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, on femicides in Argentina. As the research director of the Latin American Initiative for Open Data (ILDA), Fumega proposes a number of suggestions for recording incidents of violence, to improve femicide data. ILDA has developed a standard for recording instances of femicide, which points to the importance of standardizing data on femicides. The process of standardization is critical to keeping women safe from gender-based violence.

Our experience working to standardize data collection on femicides has shown how essential quality data is to informing public policy. We still have a long way to go in terms of data quality and governance arrangements, but without some basic steps towards standardization it will only become more difficult to understand the current situation and devise evidence-based policies to advance our understanding and promote collaboration to find solutions to these severe problems.
