Breaking the pattern of male violence: femicide watch 2018

Executive Summary

The Women's Aid of Ireland draws our attention to the issue of domestic violence and femicide in Ireland and internationally through the examination of various data. It highlights the disturbing reality that a current or former male intimate partner kills one in every two women murdered in Ireland. The article documents the work of Domestic Homicide Reviews and examines the various links between femicide and domestic violence with a focus on the risk factors for domestic homicide. It concludes with a set of recommendations for reducing femicide and violence against women.

Rather than being a new form of violence, gender-related killings are the extreme manifestation of existing forms of violence against women. Such killings are not isolated incidents that arise suddenly and unexpectedly, but are rather the ultimate act of violence which is experienced in a continuum of violence.
