Carol Orlock is the first known author to write about femicide in the second-wave feminist movement of the 1970s when she prepared an anthology of femicide. Her anthology remains unpublished.

Inspired by Orlock, Diana Russell credited Orlock when (re)initiating the use of the term in later years.
