10 Years of femicide work at UNODC

Executive Summary

This side event at the 2022 Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ) features diplomats, experts and activitsts. It will examine possible solutions, new strategies, and to promote greater awareness of femicide. The event is organized by the International Association for the Advancement of Innovative Approaches to Global Challenges (IAAI) in cooperation with Soroptomist International; next to the UNSA Vienna and other institutions.

Emphasis is on the necessity to keep the ongoing fight against gender-related killings, to overcome bias and stereotypes and to adopt prevention measures and instruments of control.

The event also commemorates the "heroine" advocates and institutions who have drawn attention to various forms of femicide.

Panelists include: Elisa Nieto Maestro, Special Adviser of the Support Department in the Government Delegation against Gender Violence, Ministry of Equality, Spain; Dubravka Šimonović, former Special Rapporteur on violence against women, 2015-2021; Rashida Manjoo, Professor Emeritus, University of Cape Town, former Special Rapporteur on violence against women, 2009-2015 (recorded video message); and Claudia Baroni, Drug Control and Crime Prevention Officer, Justice Section, Division for Operations, UNODC - among others.
