Femicide in Europe is becoming a more openly and critically discussed phenomenon in media, among people and relevant stakeholders. Femicide is a complicated multifaceted phenomenon and, as such, should be viewed within a socio-ecological perspective, taking into account feminism and intersectionality, aiming to understand, interpret, take action on, and prevent femicide. The chapter describes the initiative of a collective effort among academics and professionals to collect femicide data in European countries, including the UK and Israel. It discusses the history of this action and the theoretical perspective of femicide in Europe. It explores the development of the newly developed collection tools, one for quantitative and one for qualitative data, their pilot use, and some preliminary results. The experience revealed the need for these tools to be able to collect comparable data. The pilot study highlighted the usability of these tools and provided the opportunity of their further improvement. This supports the decision and initiative to create the European Observatory of Femicide (EOF), aiming to gather European (and beyond) data on femicide, to help in developing strategies and actions in preventing and managing the worst form of violence against women – femicide.
