Chapter 20: Femicide in Palestinian Society

Book Publication

Executive Summary

A total of 73 Palestinian women in Israel were killed between 2015 and 2020, according to data Kayan-Feminist Organization (KFO) requested from the Israeli police. Criminal complaints about violence have been increasing for the last six years, and the police continue to fail to protect women. This chapter is based on KFO’s pioneering research on femicide in Palestinian society in Israel. The chapter deals with three important aspects: (1) femicide from the perspective of the victims’ families and those close to them, (2) content analysis of the local Arab media’s coverage of femicide, and (3) the role of official institutions, especially the police and general prosecution, in preventing femicide within Palestinian society in Israel. The research showed that the causes of femicide are multifaceted and cannot be dealt with in isolation.
