Femicide Victim Sparks Urgent Debate on Gender-Based Violence in Greece

Executive Summary

Within the first ten days of 2024, a pregnant woman in her third month was murdered by her husband. He and a friend, who also attempted to kill his own wife, had planned the attack together. The victims husband had a prior history of domestic abuse, however it went unreported. In Greece, the term 'femicide' is not yet legally recognized, and efforts to integrate it into the legal system has remained limited. A 2023 report by the Council of Europe's Group of Experts on Action against Violence against Women and Domestic Violence, highlights the lack of actions from Greece and the medias sensationalization of gender-based violence. Since then, Greek police services have piloted a 'panic button' for mobile applications.
