North American necropolitics and gender: On #Blacklivesmatter and Black femicide

Article

Executive Summary

In this article, Dr. Shatema Threadcraft draws from philosopher Achille Mbembe's concept of necropolitics, which refers to "those figures of sovereignty whose central project is ... the material destruction of human bodies and populations," to explore contemporary racial politics in the United States. In this insightful piece, Threadcraft explores challenges posed by black activists and analyzes the difficulties faced by black feminist activists. Threadcraft concludes that, although the violent deaths of black men have started to receive political attention in the United States, the violent deaths of black women continue to be largely overlooked. This article is only accessible with journal subscription.

"...Black feminists must reckon with the fact that, because of significant differences between homicide and femicide, black women suffer from a spectacular violent death deficit. What can drive concern toward these more private deaths?" - Threadcraft, 2017
