The REDress Project

Art Installation
North America

Executive Summary

In 2010, artist Jaime Black created The REDress Project. The installation reminds onlookers of Canada's many Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG), and is meant to "evoke a presence through the marking of absence." Black is from Winnipeg, Manitoba, and is of Anishinaabe and Finnish descent.

The REDress Project consists of dozens of red dresses hung in public spaces, and has been exhibited in cities around Canada and the United States. The installation is also a permanent exhibit in the Canadian Museum of Human Rights.
