Data against femicide

Campaign
Latin America and the Caribbean

Executive Summary

Data Against Feminicide is a collaboration between Catherine D’Ignazio (Data + Feminism Lab @ MIT), Silvana Fumega (ILDA) and Helena Suárez Val (Feminicidio Uruguay), who came together through a shared interest in feminicide data.

In August 2019, the three collaborators met to start developing ideas to build a project about feminicide data along has three key objectives:

  • fostering an international community of practice around feminicide data
  • developing tools to support the collection of feminicide data from media sources
  • supporting efforts to standardize the production of feminicide data where appropriate

These events, which include interactive sessions, panels and workshops, allow us to support an incipient but growing community dedicated to better understanding, through data, how, where and why women are killed in Latin America and the Caribbean. The long term aim is to foster a community of practice, create connections, support each other, and build a common roadmap for action to continue developing the production of feminicide data and promote good data practices around feminicide.
