Naeemah Abrahams

Executive Summary

Dr. Naeemah Abrahams is the Director of the Gender and Health Research Unit at the South African Medical Research Council. She has authored or co-authored more than 90 publications. Her research focus is on the intersections between gender-based violence and health, including the interface with HIV, and the measurement of violence against women and children. She has a background in public health and has worked in homicide and gender-based violence research for over 30 years and femicide research for over 20 years. Dr Abrahams’ research quantifies the scope of femicide in South Africa and led the development of the first National Femicide Prevention Strategy in 2021. She has a PhD in Community Health, from the University of Cape Town and an MA in Public Health, from the University of Western Cape.
