Rwandan Genocide: Transitional Justice for Women Survivors

Executive Summary

The Rwanda genocide has had repercussions many years later which have stayed with the survivors. Three survivors of the Rwanda genocide who all have had a role in human rights advocacy for genocide survivors, were interviewed and discussed their experiences and lack of supports that exist. During the genocide, Tutsi women were the target of sexual violence solely due to their gender and identifying as Tutsi. The interviews uncovered commonalities which focus on the need to address and fulfil the human rights of those who have survived genocides. Although there is humanitarian aid that exists for women in Rwanda, there is none that addresses genocide survivors, displaying a need to begin implementation of programs within the NGO for these survivors.
