UN Women and UNODC: Pilot Study to Address Femicide Data Gaps in Mongolia

Executive Summary

A pilot study was launched by the UN Women Centre of Excellence for Gender Equality and UNODC-KOSTAT Centre of Excellence to address the glaring gaps in femicide data collection. Over 65 representatives from 21 government and international organizations gathered together to reaffirm their support for this pilot study on March 5th, 2024. The study will focus on Mongolia, this will be the first South Pacific Asia country to take part in the statistical framework study. The study has hopes to collect more data on femicide in the region, as well as gather underlying root causes that are enabling the development of prevention plans and policies. It has been noted that a key factor for this study will be to have a thorough coordination amongst law enforcement agencies from database sharing and development.

Due to the lack of institutional coordination and a unified database for homicide cases, as in other countries, identifying femicide-related data remains challenging
