South Africa: Launch Femicide Watch Tracking App

Executive Summary

The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development claim that implementing the Femicide Watch platform in South Africa is on track for April 2024. With the data that will be collected from the app, the government hopes to use it to further prevention strategies and interventions for gender-based violence. Praise Kumbala, an advocate from the department of the Promotion of Rights of Vulnerable groups hopes that with the data collected, an initiative for creating a mobile application which could focus on the SAPS and progress from court-related femicide cases. Many academics have expressed the concern for more implementation of gender-based violence training for social institutions to ensure that the program can be successful by educating those to recognize violence.
